Buckles said...: At the K-M winter quarters in Hugo just prior to catching the bus to Hot Springs, thence to Little Rock for the physical and then on to Fort Chaffee.

Buckles said...: On the bus up to Little Rock I was talking to a couple of guys who had enlisted under the "Buddy-Buddy" plan which included an additional year but they would always be together in same outfit.
Early in Basic Training one of them caught pneumonia and was Hospitalized meaning he would have to start Basic all over again with the next class.
We made life a burden on the remaining guy after we learned his Buddy was up at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri and bound for Alaska.
He immediately went to the Commanding Officer complaining that he had joined the Army with the guarantee that he and his Buddy would remain together and was told, "Soldier, don't worry about a thing, we've got a lot of Buddies over in Korea and you can pick one out as soon as you arrive!"; 28 January, 2013 11:29
