I am assuming that his death had something to do with that male elephant that is not in line behind him ? what was the elephant's name and history

LAD: Prince's history is shown below. Interesting that the photo spells Joe's name as Reid. I thought it was Reed, as Buckles' card shows.

Bill Johnston claimed Prince killed Reed while working on a motion picture, but from this photo I'm not sure that was the case.

Dave, I might be wrong but the little bit I've read in the RBBB files at CWM, I got the impression the animals were kept overnight at the Barnes quarters and went to the Studios on a daily basis as needed.

Could easily have been the case, Bob. Barnes wintered in Venice, then in Baldwin Park, convenient for studio jumps. When we had picture work at Jungleland, the only time I recall letting our stock stay overnight at a studio was on DR. DOLITTLE, at 20th Century-Fox. We had a corral set up outside Stage 21, and along with studio police, we posted one of our guys as nightwatchman. Most other times, we trucked them home to Thousand Oaks every night at wrap.
