From Jerry Digney #1

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of his passing, one of my favorite Hugo pictures (1970) at the end of his career...

"There are two fine trainers in the U.S. today, Mac MacDonald and Hugo Schmitt. In comparison, the balance are a sorry lot. It is my opinion that Schmitt is by far the best elephant “trainer” ever employed by the Ringling Show."
A portion of a letter from Bill Woodcock (1/8/61) to Chappie Fox.

Elephant's name is "Marcella" and the dog's name is "Window" who joined out one day in Venice and was kept in the bunk house to keep from following the elephants out on to the floor during rehearsals.
One day he crashed thru the window and came charging into the ring, hence the name. So Hugo added him to his act with "Targa" and the zebra and llama.
