I wasn't aware that they used the steel arena three times that year polar bears, cats and riding tiger. I asked Barbara about that she said it was true, she added that the bear act, bought from the Ringling Show the previous winter, wound up being worked by Raymond Freivogel (Dog Red). I also asked her if Rex really worked a riding tiger act and she said "Sure, in fact he trained it, Ben told him what he wanted and to use either of the two fully grown tigers in the menagerie. He chose a half grown male elephant named "Charlie" and ended up including both tigers, both of which alternated jumping aboard. Barbara added that she was originally supposed to style the act and she got along fine with the tigers but having seen "Charlie" injure several people (one fatally) she was leery him and "Charlie" knew it so Rex thought better of it. |
