Some of the exterior filming took place onboard the old passenger liner ASTURIAS, which resembled the TITANIC, since it had been built in the same shipyard. (When the film went into production, the old liner was in the process of being dismantled for scrap and had to be given a reprieve until the onboard filming could be completed.) The lifeboats came from the FRANCONIA, Winston Churchill’s seagoing headquarters during World War II. Most of the exterior scenes were filmed during mid-winter so that the actors’ breath would steam in the chilly night air |
