Even with the forward part of the ship underwater, the TITANIC’s lights stay on. (The engineers responsible for running the ship’s power plant remained at their posts and kept the lights going almost until the end. None of them survived the sinking.)

In the 1953 TITANIC, an officer goe down below to urge the engineers to continue shoveling coal to maintain power, and solemnly advises them, "You know--you may not make it out of here." In typical British understatement, one replies, "Yes, sir. That's the way of it sometimes."
