A close examination of this shot of the winter quarters main gate reveals what looks like a lion statue in the background. Could this be a studio prop or is this the actual main gate of some animal compound in the Hollywood area? |

It looks like one of the lion statues that graced the front entrance of the Los Angeles Zoological Gardens/Lincoln Park Zoo. Bordering the north edge of the Park, Selig Place was named after William Selig, who in 1911 opened a zoo and constructed a movie studio. This may either be the entrance to the old zoo/studio, or they may have used the statue from there, but I know that a lot of filming was done in an around that area long after the studio/zoo closed and was used in later years as an independent amusement park. ~frank
