"I would suggest that the big tusker at left is "Fritz", the smaller male at right is "Pilate" and in the center (10th from right) is Abbie Bates with "Mandarin".

Always glads to see that pic! I hadn't seen it with the comment under & lower detail before. Yes, the background is for "The Mahdi" "War in the Soudan" Spec. which was December 1897 - February 1898. at Olympia.

I must admit I was surprised to see the photographer was not London based.
