Joseph T. Parisi, County Executive
Dane County Board of Supervisors
Dear Board of Supervisors:

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I would like to go on record in support of circuses with elephants and respectfully request that each of you oppose the elephant ban in Dane County, WI. This proposed legislation should be stopped. I am 76 years of age and have a love for elephants but do not feel they should be banned from the circus. This is not a good piece of legislation. Please oppose it and not be influenced by a small minority who think it is a good idea. Thank you for your consideration.

John Goodall, Jr
Northfield, IL 60025

Mr. Goodall,

Thank you for writing.

I have to disagree with your opposition to the proposed ban on elephants performing in circuses on county property in Dane County. You offer no information for your opposition other than you are 76 years old and that you love elephants and circuses.

I believe if you look closely at the way circuses use elephants, you would see that elephants suffer greatly from their treatment. There is a reason why the owner of Ringling Bros. Circus last month agreed to pay a fine of $270,000 for its mistreatment of many kinds of performing animals. For your information, I have attached an article from the Associated Press regarding this case.

I support the ban and will vote for it. If you love these animals, I hope you will take into consideration the reality of their everyday living conditions. I think using elephants and other animals for circuses is archaic, and a poor excuse for entertainment knowing the kind of treatment these animals suffer.

Sincerely,
Supv. Dave de Felice
Dane County Board - Dist. 16

David, obviously, your mind is made up and you are a strong advocate of PETA, a radical organization for which I have no respect. Their record is awful. I suggest you read the truth about this organization which is totally dedicated to the elimination of elephants in circus and have a poor record . How many dogs and cats have they killed. Lots.

I am very much aware of Ringlings agreement to a fine but did not admit to wrongdoing. Our country would be better if PETA was put out of business. They are an evil organization. There are some good organizations
in this country that support animals but not PETA who spends millions on their vindictive fight against Ringling Bros.

I am a proud member of the Elephant Managers Association whose members are zoo people, circus people and others who are interested in the care of and caring for elephants.
You and I do not see eye to eye and I leave it at that.

Long live elephants in the circus. May all your days be circus days. Jonn Goodall

Well said John!
I just found out today about Dane County (Madison, WI home of the liberals) attempt to ban elephants from any circus playing there.
It's time to gather the troops and put and end to this stupidy.
We need someone to get the email address for every county board member.

I looked up Dave de Felice's information on-line and found out what political party he belongs to. (Would anyone care to guess what party that is?) Once again, the only REAL way to put an end to this foolishness is to identify those politicians who receive PETA/Animal Rights PAC money, and who must carry their water. (And that's not water for elephants!)

Buckles,
I wonder what it would cost to relocate Circus World Museum to North Dakota? I wonder why folks who applauded things like "smoking bans" didn't see this coming in our ever tipping left world. Time to get it back on a straight axis.

Here we go again with political name calling. We are not going to win anything that way!

I'm preserntly dealing with the circus animal ban on a National level...HR 3359, and I am finding that it is getting support from persons of BOTH politcal partys.

A word of advice to those who would be sending e-mail letters to any elected official regarding any legislation that would seek to ban circus animals. Most often these e-mails are read by a computer that seeks out key words such as "support" or "oppose". Your e-mail is then classified thusly. This happened to me. I sent an e-mail letter (using his "contact me" format) urging my Representative "NOT to support HR 3359". Well guess what, I got an e-mail back from him thanking me for my support for this bill, which he strongly supports. AND he is a Republican!

Follow up on my last comment.

This is from U. S. Congessman Bill Posey, Republican-FL 15th District:

"As you know, H.R. 3359 would place certain restrictions on the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling circuses and exhibitions. I appreciate knowing of your concerns regarding animal cruelty, specifically as it relates to traveling circuses and the like. I believe animals should be treated in a kind and humane manner."

Again, I wrote to him to urge that he NOT support this bill (HR 3359).

So, (VERY IMORTANT) in any e-mails that you send to members of Congerss regarding HR 3359, use the word "OPPOSE". These e-mails are read by a computer that scans for key words!

In other words, in order to get the attention of elected officials, you have to "make your presents known." (Presents of less than $1,000.00 probably won't make much of an impression.) The PETA/Animal Rights people are masters at using the plight of animals to raise PAC money. (After all, who is in favor of cruelty to animals?) They also have the advantage of having most of the mass media, Hollywood, and many prominent people in the entertainment industry on their side and actively promoting their cause. (And that cause it getting people elected who will carry out their political agenda, which is not necessarily one that a majority of Americans are in favor of.) If we put our political party loyalties ahead of identifying and then defeating PETA-supported politicians at the ballot box, then all we have to look forward to is a continuing assault against circus elephants.

Smokey told me about his conversation with a California Politician about getting around some local ordinance, finally he asked "How much will this cost me?"
and he bluntly replied "How much is it worth to you?"

Everybody has a price.

Jimmy,
I must have missed something, because I didn't see any "political name calling." Surely if there had been any it would have been deemed "unseemly" and found it's way to the donniker.
"I am finding that it is getting support from persons of BOTH politcal party's." That's a true fact, Jimmy but where is the all important MAJORITY support coming from. It's coming from the MINORITY crusaders in the Democratic camp. And that's a true fact also.
Thought from South of the Border, "only the Aztec knew what to do with a "bleeding heart." Eat it.

Wade, Who can take anything serious from someone who has their profile photo taken next to "Tricky Dicky" Nixon! :o)

Talk about political name calling!

Wade G. Burck said...

Jimmy,
Ah, there is that "political name" calling you mentioned. It must have posted late. :) Back to "support from persons of BOTH political party's" offhand, how many Democrat's are supporting it, and how many Republican's? Who is receiving the vast MAJORITY of the PETA/Animal Rights PAC money Eric mentions?

Jimmy Cole said...

Eric, The statute of limitations is up on that photo. It's OK to call him Tricky Dickie! Besides, it's Wade! :o)

Really Wade, just kidding! The far left of the Democratic party is just as bad as the far right of the Republican's.

The one saving grace that might get this bill squashed in committee, is that it discriminates against circus people. There are no such transportation bans being proposed on any other type of buisness that transports exotic animals.

Also, is the Government prepared to take possesion and care for the circus animals they put out of buisness?

Jimmy Cole said...

Hey Buckles, aren't you glad I figured out how this new comments thing works? You might not always agree with me, but I can sure get the shit stirred up!

Wade G. Burck said...

Jimmy,
Of course, I know you are kidding. Now back to "support from persons of BOTH political party's" offhand, how many Democrat's are supporting it, and how many Republican's? Who is receiving the vast MAJORITY of the PETA/Animal Rights PAC money Eric mentions? When you say "The far left of the Democratic party is just as bad as the far right of the Republican's," do you mean bad for the minority or bad for the world? Speaking of discriminating towards the circus industry, did you read this statement from Ed Stewart of PAWS in regards to circus elephants: "People take their most prized possession, their child, give it to a carny, the carny takes it, puts it on the most dangerous animal in the world, and then you give the carny five bucks. No drug test on the elephant or the carny."

This whole "circus vs animal rights" thing is nothing new. I have records of such issues back in the 1920's. Ringling itself dropped cage acts for a while back in that era over those concerns. However public demand for wild animal acts was overwhelming, and they soon returned.

We can sit here all day, and blame "those animal rights nuts", and "liberal politicians" (yes mostly Democrats) for this animal rights thing. But really, the circus industry itself must be willing to take at least some of the blame for this mess we are in now. Those masive fines that are being imposed are not because of an un-paid parking ticket!

About 12 years ago at a CHS convention, a well known circus owner was the guest speaker. He was asked "what the circus industry must do to survive this animal rights attack and make it in to the next centurty?" His answer was "we must clean up our act!".

The animal rights claims against the circus is loaded with inaccurate facts, edited videos and out right lies. But not all of it.

The opinions that I am expressing are sharred by many circus animal trainers whom I have spoken to.

Hopefully we can defeat HR 3359, as well as local issues. However the Animal rights people will only come back at us again...and again.

Jimmy,
Thank you. Your comment "BOTH" was very much a, dare I say it, misleading Democrat retort. They(the Democratic party) will often cite 100 death's attributed to dog's and 1 death attributed to cat's as proof positive that they are equally dangerous species.
You've known me a long time. How long have I been saying exactly what you said about accepting responsibility? Since 1976 to be exact. Caused some real vicious barb's to be cast in my direction over the years, but thankfully many are now seeing where it came from. I saw it when I was a "towner", long before joining the circus. Nonsense like, "they are like my children" and "they are part of the family" would go a long way in helping "clean it up" in the intelligent public eye. Let's keep a lookout for the few, still not on the up and up, embracing and claiming their "circus affiliations." Might have to cut some of the old log's loose, which aren't quality timber.

I am of the opinion that HR 3359 has nothing to do with animals and EVERYTHING to do with raising money for political purposes. The only way to fight this type of legislation effectively is for our side to start working to elect people who are supportive of business & free enterprise (including privately-owned animal acts and traveling circuses), limited government & fewer government regulations, and lower taxes (allowing people to keep more of their hard-earned money and spend it for things like circus tickets.) Until PETA’s bought-and-paid-for politicians start losing elections and the word gets out that “animal rights” is the new “third rail of politics,” this type of legislation will continue to pop up on a regular basis. (Of course, if you’re happy just putting out fires rather than dealing with the fire starters, than you’ll probably ignore my suggestion.)
