Photo credit: Universal Pictures Corporation, as
included in The Century Company book of the same
title, by Beatty and Edward Anthony.

Eric included Raymond Hatton in his tribute to Buck
Jones. Hatton portrayed the tragic Timothy O'Hara,
a once-great lion trainer, in Clyde Beatty's first
film, THE BIG CAGE. His devoted son, Jimmy, was
played by a 13-year-old Mickey Rooney. Here, Beatty
is made-up to double Hatton, whose character found
trouble in the arena.

Hatton entered movies in 1909, and accumulated credits for
more than 500 acting roles His solid background came out
of vaudeville, and he moved easily from silents to talkies.
He was married once, to his beloved Frances, for 62 years,
until her death on October 16, 1971. Hatton died 5 days later,
on October 21, of a heart attack, at 84.
