In 1930, Buck signed with Sol Lesser to make a series of sound westerns that were released through Columbia Pictures, which was then still a small, poverty row studio. The Jones westerns made so much money that Columbia eventually took over their production, using the profits from Buck’s films to expand its studio facilities and finance its prestigious Frank Capra “A” pictures. In the mid-1930s, Buck moved over to Universal, where he both starred in and produced his own films. By the late 1930s, however, singing cowboys such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers were all the rage, and Buck was hard pressed to find film work. |
