An old Pee-roo native told Roger Smith and me that Tom Mix carried a "backup" Tony as well, and that he had seen them unload the matched pair with his own two eyes. Of course you can hear anything.
Carrying a back up was sop. It made good business sense if one went down. That is why we normally used solid colored horses, and very, very few pinto's or appaloosa's. Solids are a lot easier to "twin up." Although white stocking are a bitch sometimes, pinto's and app's are almost impossible to match.
