1928 The Circus Pictorial #3

Louie Reed's last season with Sparks was 1923 and his trademark were those long looping straps hanging down beneath the elephant's chins. Looks like they would be difficult to deal with during the act or on the picket line, one more thing to keep them from chewing on. Maybe they unsnapped.
The Sparks Show never had more than nine elephants however I see that the ever dissatisfied Roland Butler has solved that problem.

Buckles,

The great Roland Butler was truly a master at what he called "helping pictures along." Want your herald or newspaper ad to depict 40 elephants when you really have 9? No problem.

I've often tried to imagine what he could have done with Photoshop.

At least he didn't put fake ears on them and palm them off as Africans.

Could that strap be a hand hold for the girl standing on the trunk?
