Welcome to Buckles Blog. This site is for the discussion of Circus History all over the world.
I GUESS OSHA IS DEMANDING HELMETS NOW. OR THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS.MUST BE FUN ON 100 DEGREE DAYS!
Among an assortment of hard hats that I have accumulated over the years is 1 that we all wore for the groundbreaking photo op at the Haines City big dig back when
better than a sore head!
TO ANONYMOUS;You obviously have NEVER put up a Big Top in 100 degree weather.I have, as recently as August, three summers ago. My 210 X 120 feet tent. The temperature hit 106 degrees. Neither I, nor any of the 16 men working with me wore helmets. And, thanks be to God, nobody got a "sore head".Prior to that, in the 11 years that we put the tent up and down, without helmets, we were blessed and NOBODY ever got a "sore head".The concept of helmets is relatively new, and is better than a fractured skull. But, I repeat, NO FUN ON "100 DEGREE DAYS".
I am not 100% sure if it was insurance related or not, but we had to wear hard hats on Circus Kirk in the 1970's.Bob
Bob, I heard it came from an OSHA visit the year before. The 'foreman' had to wear a white hat to be identifiable, the rest blue. I think Dave Fulton got to wear the white one.
