COTTAGE CAGES
Buckles,
Pleae find attached a photo ( DSC_0699 ) that shows the cage in Mr. Flint's photo "More on John Robinson #6," much clearer. ( This is a CWM collection photo ) As far as I can tell, these two cottage cages were the only two that utilized the horizantal bar set-up as seen in this photo. As can be barely seen, the cages carried large birds such as ostriches or emus and hoofed stock but not dangerous animals with those wide spread bars. Sold to Mugivan and Bowers in 1916, the cage on the left went on to be used in the 1924 Sells-Floto tour and then worked its way over to the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus by 1928 as evidenced in some Pete Mardo photos.
The second photo ( 36A ) attached is marked on the back as being from your mother's collection. This shows the cage in question in parade with the side boards in place. It carried the number 36 while on the John Robinson's 10 Big Shows. It is believed that this cage was one of three or so of the John Robinson cottage cages that was constructed by the Bode Wagon Co. around 1901 based on the particular brake design and the outside overlay sunbursts used on the wheels. That's not concrete evidence by any means but its a pretty good indicator of the Bode work. This was sold to Mugivan and Bowers in 1916. This cage later went on to the Christy Bros. Circus but doesn't seem to be accounted for after that. The photo ( 36C ) that I attached shows it on the Christy Bros. Circus. You can see the Horizantal bars have been removed and replaced with the more standard vertical bars.
Perhaps this helps just a little bit.
Bob
