DeMille did not get along with John Murray Anderson (who referred to CB as “DeMillestone around my neck.”) Because Anderson’s contract with Ringling prevented the Circus from using his production numbers in any other context, Paramount had to pay him a special fee in order to be able to show his work in the picture. (Reportedly, the “Popcorn and Lemonade” finale wasn’t included in the film because Anderson wanted too much royalty money for it. The theme music did make it into the soundtrack, however.) Anderson apparently didn’t get along with Concello either, who felt that he was charging the Circus too much for the six weeks of rehearsals he insisted upon. Eventually Concello replaced Anderson with the Barstows, who did the job in three weeks and for considerably less.
