Is Buttons being portrayed here by one of James Stewart's stand-ins?
Sure does look like him, but as Bill Ballantine once said, "Button's face wasn't a good clown face, it was a mask to hide behind." So, it could be anybody who had the right body build. ~frank
This is in fact Stewart. If you watch this scene in the movie he gets into the carriage with Dorothy Lamour.
You then get a close look at him .
As far as I can tell all the scenes with the doubles were somewhat distant shots. The one exception is the Sebastian fall. You can definitely see that it is not Stewart.
The facial features are very different than Stewart's(this scene was filmed in Sarasota).

One performer, who probably should remain nameless, broke the rules, and directly copied the Buttons makeup. At least one show even used it in ads. This rip-off was as shameless as the purloining of Emmett Kelly, Sr.'s makeup, wardrobe, and routines by Emmett, Jr., in later years.
Amen Roger, Amen.
