Arky ran the department and Hugo worked the seven young elephants in the center ring. They were delivered to him at the back door and returned to the menagerie after the act. Not much co-mingling.
In 1972 they imported 7 baby elephants for the forthcoming Ringling Park. Hugo named them "Minyak", "Mala", "Sandra", "Sheva", "Assam", "Patna"and "Matsho". When I arrived I changed all names except the first two and I think this "Minyak" remains with the company today.
I said to Sophie Fox, "I just named an elephant after you." She looked rather surprised and after a moment said "Oh Really!" She was underwhelmed but went along with it.
You're lucky she didn't call you "Buster." Chappie called her the "War Department." She managed the family finances and investments, did very well for them.

Buckles,
I have thoroughly enjoyed today's postings. What a great delivery of classic circus history. Thank you!

Buckles;
These are very informing letters. Thanks for sharing.
Elephants are Minyak" and "Emily".
Thanks Buckles. Loved every line!
Weren't Hugo and Arky together on the '54 show. Wonder how that went.

Buckles,
So this must be the Minyak of GSOE movie fame?
Wasn't there at least one other Minyak?
