I also wondered if the Young Snyder pic was made in Peru (which would make sense). In looking over the attached aerial view of the Peru quarters for the structure behind the men and elephants, I only find one possible building. Unfortunately it is very dark in the pic and so I have pranked with it to bring out some of the characteristics. I am not saying this IS the building in your photo, just that it has some similarities. From left to right in my pic we see what could be (1) the lower window over the large elephant's head, (2) the higher window to the right and (3) the pole next to the bell.

Of course this does not account for the left part of the building shown in your pic; possibly that was a later addition from after the aerial view was made.

This building is identified in a chart of the WQ as being a paint shop on the first floor and the "club rooms, hospital and barber shop" on the second. "Club rooms" might be another name for cookhouse, just as "hotel" sometimes was, and that would account for the bell.

And no, thank you, it is not necessary to mention that only a very dotty old man would engage in this exercise. Obviously I have nothing better to occupy my Saturday mornings.

The building analysis is much appreciated. It made sense to have this purposeful structure in the middle of the quarters, readily accessible to all.

Tom Duncan's "Gus the Great" would make a much better movie than H2O . . ., but a story based around the Peru quarters existence would make a truly engaging saga. Fires, floods, crime, salvation, taxes, women and men of various categories, farming, the land, Native Americans, tragedy and triumph, it's all there.

There was a report in the press many years ago that "Hollywood" had secured the rights to movie of "Gus the Great" but alas it was never made. Certainly it was a far better book than H2O.

I loved the obituary Burgoyne sent to THE BILLBOARD regarding his wife's closest friend and confidante Madam Thale.
Mentioning that she had once traveled with Burgoyne's Circus & Hippodrome, A.H. (Honest Gus) Burgoyne Owner; the same A.H. Burgoyne who is now building a great Speedway in Tamarack which will open next July 2 with three days of breath-taking races.
