I somehow managed to delete the text that Mr. Berry had included with this picture so I'll let you figure it out for yourselves until we receive further comment. |

It's a Pan Am DC-4.
Could this be RB in South America
I believe that's a good ol DC-6
Flew a bunch of noisy miles in
those reliable warhorses
DC-6 (aka C-118) had square windows.
Very reliable indeed.

The first time I was on a plane in 1947 it was a DC3, which was the same as one model of the C47.
Two engines. On one side of the aisle there was just one seat, two on the other.
In those days you were not very high and could see the landscape below you very well.
Many years later someone opened a "WW II Theme" restaurant near here. It looked from the outside like a bombed-out French chateau and in the yard was an old C47.
Just one of the many things that has reminded me of my long-gone youth.
Since jets were in use by the time Ringling went to South America, this would be Ringling going to Havana for their annual gig there. Probably 1950s but could be late 1940s. And a giveaway, the plane is a Cuban airliner! However, your blog no longer seems to allow us to greatly enlarge the image to identify people in this photo. That's not you computer's fault but apparently you are no longer using Flickr??

Dick, the pictures enlarge nicely on this end.
I will consult my technician over this matter.
This picture is labeled "RINGLING BROS AND BARNUM AND BAILEY - HAVANA 1951". I'm not sure if it is the end of the 1950-51 tour - or the beginning of the 1951-52 engagement. I thought that your sharp-eyed viewers might be able to identify a few of those on the Havana tarmac. I seen Merle Evans with a fedora sitting on the back of his head a couple of rows from the wing. Is that Michael Burke near the door on the stairs? Any others?
I see Schwartzie!
HOW'D THEY GET THE ELEPHANTS ON BOARD THROUGH THAT LITTLE DOOR???
:-)
CINDY POTTER
I was able to enlarge it ok. I think that is a young Jimmy Armstrong next to the lady in the center in the white dress.
I don't recognize the lady on the left but the gentleman on her left looks like Alvin Schwartz. On his left is Prince Paul Albert. The lady in the center in the white dress looks like Jeanne Sleeter and to her left is Jimmy Armstrong and then Frankie Saluto.
Chris...Michael Burke didn't come on the show until 1955
Cindy..they probably used the inflatable elephants same as two years ago...LOL
Dom
EVERYONE ON THE PLANE IS NOT IN THE PHOTGRAPH AS I DO NOT SEE A LOT OF THE PERFROMERS. I COULD NOT FIND MYSELF EITHER. RINGLING WENT 49 TO 50 OVER THE CHRISTMAS SEASON THEN AGAIN 50 TO 51 THE NEXT YEAR. I DO NOT THINK THEY WENT AGAIN, BUT I AM NOT AN HISTORIAN. I WENT BOTH YEARS. I RECOGNIZE MERLE EVANS, PAUL JUNG, ALVING SCHWARTZ, JEANNIE SLEETER, PRINCE PAUL, JIMMY ARMSTRONG, FRANKIE SALUTO, EMMETT KELLY, LOU JACOBS AND MYRON ORTON. WHERE THE HELL I WAS I DO NOT REMEMBER, BUT I DO NOT SEE MANY PERFORMERS LIKE UNUS, THE CHALUDIES, ETC. WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME WE HAD AND WE WERE ALL TREATED BY THE CUBAN PEOPLE LIKE GREAT STARS. JACKIE LECLAIRE
Dom-
I figured it was some sort of circus magic!!
:-)
Cindy
Cindy, if you enlarge the picture the door is much bigger
Looks like Frank McKloski at the borrom of the steps.
I think you are correct but it's
McClosky (his stage name)
The family name is hard to spell
Something like Michelshewski but
pronounced Mikelshevski
Michelshewski?
All these years I thought McClosky and Kernan (Forbes) were both Irish.
Dave Mullaney had a great story of Kernan saying to him the first time they met, "What part of Boston are you from?" and supposedly Dave said, "Quincy- I'm Shanty Irish the same as yourself."
Bobby Snowden has some hilarious
stories about Frank & Walter even
if they are slightly embroidered
