A few more good men! (From Buckles)

Craven is acknowledged as the first trainer to present the pyramid type elephant act as we know today.
Prior to that it had been single acts or elephant races on the track.
He put acts together for every major circus of the day.

Born 1834 in Ohio.
1853 Van Amburg's Menagerie
1850's Mabie Bros.
1865 Dan Rice Circus (4-Paw owned)
1870 Howes Great London
1876 Adam Forepaugh Shows
1879 Cooper and Bailey

Died in Dallas, Texas Jan. 16, 1890.

Where and how did Craven learn to train elephants?

Probably self taught since everything he did was innovative.
Elephants aren't that hard to train if you have a knack for animals.
I can imagine how people must have reacted when they saw their first elephant long mount on tubs which no act is complete without today.
