San Diego Zoo #2

S.D. Zoo-2, originally uploaded by bucklesw1. (Dr. Wegeforth riding one of the Zoo's first elephants.) Finally, in 1923 the Zoo acquired two elephants named Queenie and Empress from Frank Buck. The Zoo hired a baggage car to have them shipped down from San Francisco by rail. (They tore up its insides.) Arriving without a handler, the two elephants eventually reached the Zoo, but only after Wegeforth and an associate personally rode them through the city, guiding them by trial and error.
