Look Magazine #1 (From Larry Kellogg)

Look Magazine 1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Buckles,

Do you know anything about this elephant named Anna May, featured in the Feb. 1, 1938 issue of Look Magazine?

There are only two pages with the elephant. The other pages in the article are other “Hollywood Stunts.”

"She has always been something of an enigma to me, particularly
since I am so familiar with the name.
I have her listed as making movies out of the Selig Zoo in the 1920's
which I don't think existed as late as 1938.
Maybe some of you West Coast guys could shed some light on this."

Buckles,
There is a fascinating website dedicated to the History of the Selig Zoo. Go to http://www.lincolnheightsla.com/selig/

The History states the Zoo existed until the 1930's. I might also add that the elephant Billy Sunday was still at this facility until Oct. 17, 1939 when it was called the Lincoln Park Zoo.

According to the Internet Movie Data Base, Iona Reed (the stunt girl shown in the photos) worked primarily in B westerns and an occasional A picture. She was Maureen O’Hara’s stunt double in the 1939 remake of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.

By the late 50's, the Lincoln Zoo was long gone, replaced by a permanent carnival. I can still remember the stone lions that framed the front gates. Today that location is a distribution warehouse, I think. ~frank

Didn't the Russell show winter at Selig at one time?
