Buckles, Sad news received from Phil Schacht that their elephant Dondi passed away on July 26 at Southwick's Animal Farm in Mendon, MA. She was being treated for a tooth infection by the zoo Vet. The exact cause of death is not yet known. Dondi was 36 years old. I'm sure we all offer our sincere condolences to the Schacht family on the loss of their beloved Dondi. From The Boston Globe: An Asian elephant rescued more than 30 years ago from a camp in Thailand has died at a local zoo.
The animal, Dondi, died Wednesday morning at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon.
Dondi was rescued from a lumber camp in Thailand in April 1975 by Phil and Francine Schacht.
Dondi had been introduced to several elephants throughout her years but was not interested in them. She had already adopted what she considered her own family, the Schachts. She was even part of a family wedding party in 2008.
Dondi traveled with the family to promote environmental and conservation awareness. The Schachts noticed something was wrong with Dondi, so they called in Peter Brewer, DVM at Southwick’s Zoo.
Veterinarians worked relentlessly trying to find the critical issues with Dondi's illness, but she died despite efforts to save her.
She will be buried on Southwick's Zoo grounds.

The local Orlando TV news folks reported this also. It seems that in the Winter Months, Dondi and family stayed in Metro Orlando and performed at Flea World, a large flea market complex in Sanford, Fl, just north of Orlando.
My condolences to the family.
The date is actually the 28th. My heart goes out to the entire Schacht family. Words can't begin to say enough!
Our deepest sympathy also to the Schact Family. We will miss her wonderful "impersonations" among other things.

So sad. The love and cmmitment of the family and Dondi is wonderful and a great example of what so many in the circus do in caring for their animals. From aerial circus performers with no animal background is an icreditable story in itself. We share your grief.

We are pleased to have worked with you at various times [before and after Dondi]. I hope it was not a case of too much rompum. It has happened before. Again our heartfelt sympathy over your loss.
(Sad sad news)
nice folks--knew them back in the day at Beatty-Cole and later when they worked the elephant act with us (the Chicago BOZO) at Medinah when Pat Delaney was producing--what a nice looking, good natured, loyal elephant--a true family member..this makes us all sad for the whole Dondi family.
Phil & Francine were very good
friends of mine back in the day
With permission they used my
clown theater masks logo for the
"Flying Apollos" letterhead and
along with a few other performers
were covered under our corporate
Blue Cross health insurance plan
The three of us took a Caribean
cruise that turned out to be a
full week of comedy routines
Phil was 1 of Bobby Yerkes finds
from Muscle Beach
I recall that shortly after Phil
finished the 2 living quarters in
the truck with a window between
so they could keep an eye out
Dondi decided to "remodel" the
the whole floorplan
Condolances to the entire Schact family on this tragic loss. I watched Dondi perform more than once over the years at Medinah (Shrine) Temple in Chicago. A very talented elephant.
