Playing Jaffar, the charismatic Conrad Veidt not only received the film’s top billing, but also created one of the most memorable screen villains of all time.

This was the consummate bad guy to my Grade School buddies and I, we somehow had him pegged as a Nazi.
Particularly in the John Hall, Maria Montez movies.
To our delight, he once asked the sinister question, "....and 'twat will happen to you next?"
This feeble attempt at double entendre remained with us for years.

Some characters become solid stock personalities, similar to the itinerant Italian companies of Commedia dell'arte of the 1500's.

Jaffar was the evil one in Disney's animated film, "Aladdin".

In the Broadway musical, "Mel Brooks' The Producers" a character shouts, "Sabu, champagne" and an actor enters with a tray of champagne. Of course he worn a turban; the bit got a big laugh.

Commedia dell'arte?

Please, Mike, we're trying to conduct a nice little high-grass, low-brow outfit here. Kindly refrain from confusing us with material from "Theatre 101."

P S: You must have gone to school with my mother. In her day they taught stuff like this in public schools. She was always talking about Columbine and Harlequin and Pierrot, all of which went right over my head.

Whitey,

Can you imagine how I felt when I had to learn the meanings of: bally-broad, doniker, mark, John Robinson, jump and legal adjuster?

I was Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (Rodgers and Hart, songwriting team for Billy Rose's Jumbo).

Mike, in High School I was a great fan of Walt Kelly's "Pogo Possum".
His creepiest character was "Sarcophagus Macabre" who was often accompanied by three bats, "Bewitched", "Bothered" and "BeMildred".

Sorry, Michael - While Rogers and Hard did do the words and music for "JUMBO" "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" was NOT one of the songs from that great show, it was from "Pal Joey" for which they also did the words and music. ~frank

Mike: Legal Adjuster?

Oh, you must mean the fixer or the patch.

Buckles: They's a alligator outside a'lurkin' and a'lurkin.

And leave us not forgit P T Bridgeport.

Frank,

I am aware of that.

I should have mentioned Pal Joey, but I wanted to make a circus reference with "Billy Rose's Jumbo" to show that theatre and circus can be closely related.
