The Clarke Family #7

MAIL0366, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

The combined Hanneford-Clarke families with
Hagenbeck-Wallace.

"Ernie once told me that when Cheerful Gardner did the
head-carry down he track with "Blanche" the band played
"Tell me pretty maiden are there any more at home like you?"
She always laughed because his face would be smushed
up like a prune."

Does anyone know the names of all in this photo, and the only one who looks familia looks like Poodles Hanneford in the comic character. I belive there is a connection between those families, but can not remember that either. Jackie

Kim Baer, for those who don't know, is the daughter of Parley Baer and Ernestine Clarke. Kim advises this about the photo: The name "Ernestine" was a lasting nickname, as her true birth name was Elizabeth Laura Clarke. She was the daughter of Ernest Clarke and Elizabeth Rebecca Hanneford, also called Becca, and Baba. "Ernestine" caught on early, as did "Ernie", and for all practical purposes became how she was known.

In further reply to JACKIE Le CLAIRE, Kim identifies everyone as: L to R, Ernest Clarke, Gracie Hanneford, her daughter Grace, Poodles Hanneford, Ernestine Clarke, Mrs. Elizabeth "Nana" Hanneford, Elizabeth Rebecca Hanneford (Mrs. Ernest) Clarke, and Charles Clarke. Thus, the connection Mr. LeClaire refers to was by marriages.

The name Elizabeth recurred many times among the Hannefords, right along to Parley and Ernestine's #2 daughter, Elizabeth Dale Baer.

A thousand thank you's for the names from this great family. I should have recognized Gracie, and a few of the others as I worked with them much later in life on the Davenport winter dates. What a legendary family this was and such a contribution to the circus world. Thanks again, Jackie
