Rubin & Cherry (Set 1) #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Rubin & Cherry No. 1-1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

In 1940, TRU-VUE issued A NIGHT AT THE CARNIVAL, two 35mm filmstrips of stereo (i.e. 3-D) photos “taken with the hardy cooperation of the management of the Rubin & Cherry Exposition, The Aristocrat of the Tented World.” These Rubin & Cherry filmstrips apparently never sold as well as TRU-VUE’s filmstrips of the 1941 Ringling-Barnum Circus, since they are now quite scarce.

Here are the 14 photos contained on filmstrip #1. See today, they provide an invaluable look at what a big railroad carnival was like in the years immediately proceeding the U.S. becoming involved in World War II.

Photo #1 shows the midway at night, as seen from the Giant Ferris Wheel.

Surely the Striker agent must

I find it amusing that the rides

that were called "major" for years

now appear so "minor" as compared

to the tremendous imports today

Early improvements included going

from "ground up" to "mounted"

From sill irons to truck beds

Some became far less laborious
