The glamour of showbiz!!
Harold and Eileen Voise, with catcher Dick Anderson, trained Ricardo Montalban in basic flying tricks for the "Equilibrium" sequences of MGM's THE STORY OF THREE LOVES (1953). Before shooting started, the studio re-cast the role of Pierre with Kirk Douglas, opposite the lovely and tragic Pier Angelie as Nina. Dick told me with Kirk involved, the schooling, of course, had to re-start from day one, but Kirk did well and caught three tricks for the camera. As the catcher, Dick landed the speaking role of Marcel, and had lines with Douglas. The big finish trick had Kirk catching as Pier sprang from a diving board, through a paper hoop, to the hands of Dick, up there trying to look like Kirk. Dick said this was his scariest trick--they worked 80 feet up for this shot. For story impact, the owner had the net dropped to stop the trick--where have we seen that one before?--but Kirk and Pier pulled it off. Dick advised that net was very much in place when Eileen plummeted through the hoop.
Correction: Pier Angeli--not "ie". IMDb reminds us she married Vic Damone, had one son, Perry. Overdosed on barbituates at 39, in 1971.
