At the late, lamented Hertzberg Collection, of San Antonio, there was a photo of Ben Davenport standing proudly on the vestibule of his private car, above an all caps label proclaiming JOHN RINGING NORTH. I was among those who sought to correct the caption, and met with the standard, wearily indulgent response by the City's degreed librarians: "Yes, we have people tell us these things." When the Hertzberg went to crates in a basement, such errors remained uncorrected.
Roger,
I think that this is a fairly common answer when someone knows more than the "professional" museum people. They don't seem to be able to admit that you may know more than they do.
One exception was Chappie Fox, who
took to heart that other people may see something or know something that he didn't or was not aware of and he would check it out and then make the correction.
