Conklin All-Canadian Shows 1942 #1

Scan12770, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Speaking of Carnivals, here are a few more pictures of
the Terrell Jacobs Circus on the back end of the Conklin
midway in 1942.
In the doorway you can see one of the three Dolly Jacobs
elephants that my father worked that year.
I think the tent was about an 80 with two middle pieces.
The elephants and lead stock were kept in the front round end
similar to the Ringling menagerie of the early 1950's
A ring set up between the first two center poles, the arena
permanently set up in the next area and the cats spotted in
the back round end.
Not much room for seats but I suppose with a grind show it
wouldn't make much difference.

Wonder how they got Cap Jacobs to approve this sign without the other "L" for TERRELL?

As legend goes for grind shows, on the Beatty show, in the 60s, one memorable Matinee-only Sunday drew an overflow crowd, and word came down for a 2nd show. The people kept coming and a 3rd show was ordered. The date became historical with the 4th show, but proved a killer when a weary troupe made its way through a 5th performance. I heard from old-timers that Beatty's cats were getting hot on that 3rd show, but five shows took a toll of excessive danger for everyone, man and animal alike. The exhausted company tore down in the wee hours, and the following Monday was tense for a critically over-worked show.

One wonders how many shows per day were demanded of the Jacobs performance.

I saw this show at the WI state fair in the mid to late 40's and as I recall it was first class.

Also, Clyde Beatty was in Beloit, WI during the war (WWII) when he was with the Johnny Jones carnival
and I don't remember much about the show as I not very old then, but I was impressed!

They also buried a tiger on the lot, which was later developed as a subdivision for returning vets who could afford a 4 room house.

If I can find any negatives, I will get them printed and send them in.

Maybe Ole Whitey can comment on this.
