Cole Bros 1950 program cover

Cole Bros 1950 program cover, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

For Harry Kingston:

Zack Terrell sold the Cole show to Jack Tavlin and others in early 1949. Following a loosing 1949 season Tavlin and associates looked for new buyers since they still owed Terrell money. Very early in 1950 the Cole show was purchased by Arthur Wirtz and James D. Norris (owner of the Detroit Stadium and various sport enterprises). In March, it was announced that William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy) acquired a partial interest and would join the show for a series of arena and ballpark engagements before the show would switch to an under canvas tour mid-summer. That happened after a July 17-22 stand in Philadelphia where Boyd appeared for the last time. The under canvas tour came to an end soon thereafter on Aug 5. Early in 1951 Wirtz acquired Boyd’s share of the show, said to be one-third. The Cole show’s only 1951 engagement was its Chicago stand after which some of its equipment was sold to and adapted for use by a number of motorized circuses while the remainder languished in Peru. The Columbia wagon went to Bill Brinley and from him to the future Circus World Museum.

Incidentally, there are two different printed editions of the 1950 program whose cover is shown here.
