This Bert doing this move while Rex overlooking. They had to make sure that the New Vargette's were taken care of. It was refreshing going to a tent show except when we had to do those horrible emergncy tear downs due to bad weather. I remember trying to hold a quarter pole down but it was goint up and down with the wind. That was pretty scary. We did learn alot more on Circus Vargus and had more opportunities. Darlene
Darlene, I recall being woken up on night, by Cliff banging on the door screaming, "get the bitch down, get the bitch down." Groggily I asked Tracy, "what the heck is going on," to which she replied, jumping up, "it is an emergency tear down, the whole show has to help." I said, "you gotta be nut's, I'm a coliseum guy,"" as I rolled over and went back to sleep." LOL Great, and wonderful memories, thank you so much for the pictures. Wade Burck
I was visiting Pat Anthony and Big John Richards on Vargas, in Garland, Texas, in '76, when the Highway Patrol brought warnings of a gale force blow coming in about an hour. Vargas called a frantic meeting in the Big Top and told everyone they were needed. I helped tear down Pat's arena and load his truck, then we returned to spread hay for lowering the Big Top. The winds came with a vengeance, and just as Frank Peeler had the top on the ground, the long side stakes were pulling. The show was saved. If you've been in wind like this, you probably experienced what Vargas did that afternoon--the wind blew on, with no further warnings behind it. But the show was down and it was quickly decided to cut the night show and get a head start for the next town, Petaluma, California.
