This particular poster dates from the late 1920s an era when the Sparks Circus (1894-1931) was known for its wild animal acts. According to a review of the show from the October 12, 1926 "St. Petersburg Times" Sparks Circus carried what was described as one of the largest groups of tigers in the country - 11 of them were in the menagerie, two of which were less than two months old.

I am intrigued that the cats, generally, are depicted slightly larger than the Polar Bears.

OFF SUBJECT: TCM ran GSOE yesterday as part of Oscar Month. I've seen this picture since its release, and can recite the dialogue along with the actors. But in the train wreck scene, where once again I did not find that split-second glimpse of Mabel Stark I've heard of, I did spot two Compound trainers I'd never identified before. In the shot where the actress screams, "Don't let him in here!", there is Pat Anthony with chair and stick, warding off the lion. In the shot of another escaped lion, a male voice advises, "There's no place like home, Nero", there is Frank Phillips in the center of the frame. The things we discover after seeing a picture dozens of times.
