She was an African forest elephant, obtained by Howard Bary at the Gangala-na-Bodio elephant station in eastern Belgian Congo (later Zaire and now Democratic Republic of the Congo). Bary delivered her to the show early in the 1947 season. Abele died in New York in 1956 while walking to the train after the end of the Garden date. She was the last forest elephant with an American circus. They are now considered a separate species.
