One of the lesser--and lesser known--world’s fairs is that held at Portland in 1905, the Lewis and Clark Exposition celebrating the centennial of the two explorer's westward march. The fair aimed to promote the region’s economy such as lumbering and it was here that plywood was first introduced to the world. The midway area was appropriately called “The Trail” and featured the usual shows such as the Canals of Venice and the Oriental Bazaar. Also available for those exploring The Trail was Jabour’s Trained Wild Animal Arena (and likely where this photo was taken) as well as W.H. Barnes Exhibit of Educated Animals which featured Princess Trixie the Educated Horse and the "Famous Diving Elk." I don’t know of any relation between this Barnes and Al G. but the performing elk harkens back to a discussion of couple of years back on this blog of trained elk.
