Mickey Graves, longtime prop boss
Glenn’s dad, Arnold C. “Mickey” Graves, was born in 1879 and began as a rigger on Forepaugh-Sells for the seasons of 1902-04, then moved to Barnum & Bailey for 1905 becoming prop boss the next year and continuing for 32 more seasons. Those were the days when the prop department consisted of 70 men, the number Graves superintended during his last season of 1938. He returned to work for the Ringling interests when they assembled their continental-style Spangles edition in 1943. He was a stage technician at the Century Theatre when he died from a heart attack while working there on June 7, 1944. Glenn was a sergeant overseas and so it was not until March 25, 1946, after his return, that the ashes of his father were sprinkled from an airplane over the Ringling big top in Sarasota while Glenn, his mother, and two of his three brothers watched.
