Back to James Bros.: I took Chuck Hayes with me on my first tour for Uncle Sid. We had runs that had gone out with every cat act the Compound booked, but there was a problem Chuck and I didn't know of until out first time to load out. The shifting boxes had been overhauled for the tour, and Otis, our plumber, got involved. New floors were installed, but when the wheels were affixed, Otis didn't line them up. Two at one end were narrower than the next two, meaning the front wheels would jump off the runs. With a lion slamming to and fro in a cage cock-eyed on the runs, we spoke harshly of the moment. Chuck darkly swore Otis to murder most foul. By the time we returned, Chuck's disenchantment was broiling, but Otis was on vacation, never knowing how close he came to being fed to the lions.
