Gary Jacobson between "Hugo" and "Charlie".
Roy Billingsly (my wife's nephew) between "Barbara" and "Sophie".
Cookie (that's all I remember) between "Josky" and "Major".
Linda to the left of "Carmen".
Some of you Billy Smart people might remember a few of these elephants.
I knew all the elephants just didn't know the people from that year,76? This must of been just before the park closed the first time to remodel?
Hugo Schmitt picked up a former STL Children's Zoo elephant, Joyti, in September, 1967. I didn't witness the event but Hugo and ? came over with maybe Targa and collar chained Joyti and she was off in showbiz. I heard she was renamed, I think Mudu, and she had a bad foot or knee. Would the Mudu pictured be that elephant?
I had Mudu on the ride, actually I had the misfit herd, George, Vance, Rebecca and Mudu. Rebecca had a large bursa on her leg but Mudu was a sound elephant, just slow upstairs.
Second thought Mudu was a Billy Smart elephant.
Buckles,
Could the guy to the right of "Carmen" be Ted Swartestsky?(I'm sure I spelled it wrong)
That sure looks like his stance. And the time frame seems right too.
Ted wasn't there at that time.
I think he was still on the Beatty Show.
i remember at least once taking the herd across the road to the truck stop, next to the Holiday Inn, to weigh each bull on the truck scales for the press--a big hit!
Tommy Henry once told me that Mudu's original name was "Chi Chi".
Hugo renamed her after one of the German elephants he brought over in 1947.
Gary, do you remember "Tagu"?
I think she is the elephant Jim Alexander is describing that Hugo picked up from the children's zoo in 1967.
Yes, Capt I do remember Tagu. She was a misfit also, just never did the ride. I can't remember where she ended up. I have a letter from you when I was in NJ and in it you asked if I could trade a couple of baby africans for Tagu and another?
