One of the great shots of Lou, with a perfect makeup, was on a whiteface background and a white skull cap. I asked him about this, when otherwise we'd see the Auguste concept. He said Pat Valdo would come back some winters and ask the clown to vary their makeups for publicity purposes--to make it look as though there were more clowns. We see another example of Lou with his basic face, but again in whiteface in a duo shot with Paul Jerome in his tramp character--not forgetting Jerome also had a very distinct whiteface used in some year.
I mentioned a "perfect" makeup above--I have one of Lou with the makeup not up to standard. I asked if this was him, and he laughed and showed it to his colleagues. "Oh, God! I must have been drunk when I put that one on!"
But this is Lou, and the giraffe, I believe, is either Edith or Boston.
Thanks Roger! Then there is also a shot of Lou in this makeup during the final parade scene of DeMille's GSOE where he is banging a bass drum. If I'm not mistaken, there might be a shot of him in that same parade in his regular makeup. ~frank

I was told that this was Paul Jerome, but he sure looks a lot like Lou Jacobs to me. ~frank

This is one of the most classic clown/animal publicity shots ever taken.
The Ringling show (and a few others) used it for many, many years.
