Every year about this time, my wife likes us to watch A CHRISTMAS STORY, the 1983 classic film about a little boy who wants a Red Ryder Daisy BB gun for Christmas. (“You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.”) My favorite sequence is where he gets a Little Orphan Annie secret decoder ring in the mail and, the first time he goes to use it, discovers that the “secret message” is a crass commercial for Ovaltine! In 1934, Frank Buck had a radio show BRING ‘EM BACK ALIVE that was sponsored by Pepsodent, and which, not surprisingly, offered Frank Buck radio premiums.
