As part of his portrayal of Gunga Din, actor Sam Jaffee, without the benefit of a stunt double, does a fairly credible job of mounting an elephant like an experienced mahout. (In addition to GUNGA DIN, Jaffee is probably best remembered today as the High Lama in the 1937 version of LOST HORIZON and as the crippled merchant prince Simonides in the 1959 version of BEN HUR.) |

Sam Jaffee was 47 when he played Gunga Din. Sabu was the studio’s original choice for the role, but he was unavailable. When Jaffee was later asked how he was able to play an Indian native so perfectly, he would answer, “I would THINK SABU.”
