"The Circus" (From Don Covington) Part 1

Knecht 1934-1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Hello Buckles,

Uber Circus Fan Eddy Motta just sent me a copy of the children's photo book "THE CIRCUS" By Klara Knecht. The book was published in 1934 by Saalfield Publishing Company of New York and Akron, Ohio. Klara Knecht is listed as author, with the subheading "Educational Director of Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus". Karl K. Knecht, Harry Atwell, Lentz Studios, Charles L. Frank and Century Photos are credited with providing the photos. The story line follows the Hagenbeck Wallace Circus from winter quarters to performances on the road. You'll notice that the editors utilized quality press photos throughout (some of which are obviously from shows other than H-W).

I've seen several of these photos already on your blog, but thought I'd send along scans of the entire set so that you can see them all.

All the best,

Don

A. Morton Smith writes in his 1942 Hobbies article "Circusiana - Elephant History" that Karl Kae Knecht made an elephant census in 1933, documenting an estimated 300 elephants in the country. Do any copies of this census exist, possibly published in White Tops?
