Michael Christensen once told me that an early Big Apple review complimented the juggling of Binder & Stubbs explaining how cleverly they had tossed around clubs, balls, torches and even a chicken. I can't recall the name of the name of the clown with Sid Kellner's show that had the "Vanishing Chicken" shot from a cannon (he had a slight accent and called it a "canyon") into a suspended bird cage. Maybe Erik remembers him. "Boys and girls, I will now place the chicken into the canyon and at the speed of lightening will be shot through space and reappear in the cage high above ring 1". After much ado the cannon was fired, the shroud over the cage dropped and "Lo and Behold" the impossible had been accomplished. The kids would immediately begin screaming, demanding to a closer inspection of the cannon, an accusation he would deny but while exiting would pull a cord releasing the original chicken, to the satisfaction of the kids with the denial, "That's not my chicken!" This immediately became the catchphrase for the entire show whenever the responsibility of a problem arose. Even Uncle Sid when confronted would say, "That ain't my chicken Pal!". |

The clown pictured juggling the chickens is Don Young aka Poko. He was a fixture on Big John Strong's circus in the mid-1970s. This was a part of his egg-tray gag. I think this photo was taken on Big John's show. I know the info with the photo doesn't say he was with Kellner's show, I also don't believe Don was ever with any of Sid's operations to my knowledge. As to what happened to Don Young or where he is now, I haven't a clue. Don was with Big John's show from about 1976 thru the 1978 seasons.
