Working with the young male giraffe, "Lucky" on Circus Knie. Closest thing we've seen to this in USA was when Buffy (young Mark Oliver Gebel) sat astride the giraffe Dicky in the center ring on the 1981-82 RBBB-Red. But there was no trotting around by the giraffe as a we see here.

I should add that I have seen a photo from the Bronx zoo in, perhaps, the 1920s of a keeper sitting in a special saddle on the back of a giraffe.

This is Freddy Knie senior in practise. Late 60s or beginning of the 70s. Gunthers Giraffe could not gallop because of the ring rubber, to slippery. It doesnt take much for a giraffe to break or dislocate a leg.

John Herriott to Frankie Braun:

"Frankie, when the horse starts to buck, you jump right in behind and pop him with that menage whip.
Don't worry he won't kick you."

G'day Richard,
Back in the mid '70's at the Hanover Zoo in Germany, the Head Keeper of the Giraffe Section had his photo taken riding on the back of a male Reticulated giraffe.

Happy Days
