3. And then for something completely different. A training session at Bertram Mills Circus at Kings Ride Ascot, the winterquarters. The elephants seem to belong to a John Cindl (according to the information on the back of the picture). It says: 'The elephants have been with the circus since 1934, when the youngest was four years old'. Even the name of the girl is mentioned: Phyllis Allan.

The date? November 21st 1949.

Since the lovely Phyllis Allan has been mentioned.... I've just been sent a programme of the 1990 tour of Paulo's Circus in which I toured England with Phyllis. As was pointed out, there is a definite facial resemblance between Phyll and Susan Boyle (of "Britain's Got Talent" fame). Both are/were Scots!

I believe it is spelled Gindl. After Mills closed, he was on Billy Smart presenting liberty horses where I saw him in 1969 dressed in a silvery grey tails and top hat--very elegant. He was regarded as a fine trainer.

Indeed, "Uncle John's" name was Gindl.
