Pio Nock. Wolfgang Holzmair’s lions were already in the big cage directly below Nock when he rode across on the bicycle. Wolfgang would get them all roaring to emphasize the danger Nock was in should he fall. (I seem to recall reading in THE WHITE TOPS that, at one performance, Nock did in fact fall down into the “den of fury” but got out OK.) |

I believe Bill Ballantine refers to this incident in his book, "Clown Alley".
These are great pictures. It was just before I really started paying attention to the Ringling show and it's really bringing a period that, up until now, I had only read about. Thanks so much for sharing them here!
If I'm not mistaken, Wolfgang said that the lions just sat there and stared at Pio. Almost like, 'What's he doing in here?' ~frank
