My love for the circus was inherited from my father. He would tell me stories of the shows he saw and the ones his father saw as an engineer for the Reading Railroad, although he couldn't always remember their names. My dad's enthusiasm was greatest for Golden Bros. 5 Ring Circus. As I began to read about circuses, I told him his memory must be wrong because there were no references to Golden Bros., or any 5 ring circus for that matter, back in the 20's and 30's. He insisted he remembered it. It was only after he died that I found Golden Bros. Circus listed in A History of the Circus, but with very little information. It wasn't until I became acquainted with this blog that I knew any older circuses had 5 rings. This route card shows Golden Bros. playing Milton, PA where my dad grew up on June 15, 1923. It only had 4 rings, not 5, but it obviously made a huge impression on my dad who would have been 10 years old. Thanks, Buckles, this has brought back so many warm memories of my father.
Is this the circus that George W. Christy bought in late 1924 and paid $20,000 for it with 20, $1000 bills and made his money back before it closed that year. And brought it to Beaumont, Texas to winter and changed the name to Lee Bros. Big 4 ring wild animal Shows. It lasted 2 years, 1925 and 1926. And using Shows instead of a circus you got the local town license alot cheaper. Harry

Golden Bros. Circus was out 1923 -24 and again in 1938. Mike Golden and John Pluto were the proprietors.
