I first knew the Flying Gaonas on the Beatty show, in '64. Tito was perfecting his triple then, and catching it regularly. Pictured here l to r are, Tito, Armando, and Chela. Papa Victor was catching, and made Ringling show flying acts his personal dynasty, not unlike Art Concello from the '30s on.
the gaonas joined beatty cole in the fall of 1957, and over the next few years were part of the backbone of the show, presenting casting bars, first with victor, mario and armando, later with victor, armando and lupe. mario did head balancing trapeze one year. victor did tight wire several years. and of course, tito, armando, chela and victor did their famous trampoline act, sometimes with baby richie as well. they debuted the flying act in april, 1962, with the beatty-cole-produced sells and gray and king bros palisades park date, with the trampoline act in ring 3 while the wallabies trampoline was in ring one, featuring johnny pugh. then when beatty opened its season they were featured, along with beatty himself, lanorma and a number of others. they stayed on beatty until moving to ringling. they were great performers, modern-day circus royalty, and also great people. among the nicest, friendliest and most profesional families the circus world has ever known.
This was an amazing act and of course Tito was the star--a publicity guy's dream; terrific with the press and so photogenic and another superlative showman--the Blue had several of these, including Elvin who also looked great and was an elegant performer--that heel catch act he learned from Gerard Soules is still one of my favorites and it looked great in the arena--a real show stopper;
You have never ridden the Pirates of the Carri bean ride at Disneyland, until you've ridden it with Tito. He got the entire boat to stand up and sing 'Yo ho, yo ho a Pirate's life for me!' They shut down the ride and walked all of us out of the show building! ~frank
I first mead Tito and his Family in 1963 when the worked for my uncle, Adolf Althoff, for 10 days for a special Show he did in the Sports Arena in Cologne. The came from Sweden where the worked for Trolle Rodin for a Season and I think the did one more stop in Paris before the went back to the US. First flying act to hit Europe that did a consistent triple somersault and the where the stars of the stars.
