More Merle Evans #3

For some reason you don't see many musicians with mustaches so it's always easy to spot Henry Kyes in the brass section.
Henry was band leader on the Polack Show when we were there in the 1960's.

Henry Kyes bore a strong resemblance to band leader Paul Whiteman and was billed as “The Paul Whiteman of the Big Top.” Smokey once told me that Kyes even used the principal theme from RHAPSODY IN BLUE as an overture. (The Paul Whiteman orchestra had originally premiered this work.) In 1943, Henry Kyes was borrowed from the big show band to conduct SPANGLES, the one-ring “Continental Circus” that Robert Ringling produced for Madison Square Garden.

But, as Pete Cristiani points out, even with a strong performance bill, including the Cristianis, the show was not a box office success.
