Henry Kyes bore a strong resemblance to band leader Paul Whiteman and was billed as “The Paul Whiteman of the Big Top.” Smokey once told me that Kyes even used the principal theme from RHAPSODY IN BLUE as an overture. (The Paul Whiteman orchestra had originally premiered this work.) In 1943, Henry Kyes was borrowed from the big show band to conduct SPANGLES, the one-ring “Continental Circus” that Robert Ringling produced for Madison Square Garden.
.. One ring....ONE RING???
Oh my God.. the sky is falling... the sky is falling!!
klsdad
But, as Pete Cristiani points out, even with a strong performance bill, including the Cristianis, the show was not a box office success.
