Hardin-Simmons University (my alma mater) in Abilene, Texas, hired Evans to be its band director during the musicians' strike. Everything seemed to go well until Merle tried to organize a school dance. HSU is a Baptist school, and everybody knows good ole' Baptists arent' suppose to dance--or at least they should not be too visible while participating in a high school sock hop. Evans was very visible on the RBBB band stand whenever Big Bertha visited Abilene before and after the strike; Lane Talburt
Lane, A musician friend of mine went to Hardin-Simmons and the first year he came home for Thanksgivng and we could hardly understand him due the fake accent he had picked up. Bob Kitto
